The term „search marketing“ is used as an umbrella term to cover both organic (SEO) and paid search (SEM). Let’s have a short look at what they are and how you can use them to your advantage.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization


All search engines have what we call "organic" or "natural" listings called search results, where web pages and other content, such as images, videos and other useful information are shown and ranked based on a multitude of so-called ranking factors. The goal of search engines relying on these ranking factors is to show users the most relevant results for their search term. These listings appear without anyone paying for them to appear.


So, what can SEO do for you? Basically, it takes care that your site pops up in the search results when people search for something related to your site or topic.

SEM - Search Engine Marketing


This is the paid advertising option from search engines, which allows you to reach potential customers, who are actively searching for or are interested in your products and services. These listings can also be referred to as PPC or CPC listings, which just describes the way these listings are paid for: Pay-Per-Click or Cost-Per-Click.

SEM has one big advantage: everything happens in real time, so you can almost instantly see the results of your efforts and make adjustments. The downside is that it can get rather expensive, if not managed properly.

FUN FACT: Not too long ago, this was called SEA – Search Engine Advertising, so if you come across this term, you’ll know what it means.

It is highly recommended to use both strategies in your online marketing mix.


Even though SEO takes quite a long time to optimise properly and to begin seeing results, it is a long-term marketing investment, which, of done right, will secure high-value traffic to your site without the need for constant payment.


On the other hand, SEM will almost instantly get you high volumes of traffic, but the conversion rates are much lower than SEO traffic, and you have to pay for every click, which can become rather expensive if not done right.
